With Melodicon, a microphone becomes a camera.  Thousands of musical tones, from the lowest rumble to highest ring of a bell, are instantly transformed into colorful, dynamic forms.  Video streams are enhanced with sound, and when the camera is turned back onto the video display, a fluid barrage of colors will appear, evolving from one extreme to another in the blink of an eye.

The following links lead to video clips and image galleries that illustrate the vast potential of sound to light conversion as a means of creative expression as well as a tool for musical research and study.  Please check back soon for updates!

Performance

Melodicon has been featured on greater Boston cable access stations, during live performances with sound artists, musical performers, and contact-improv dancers.

Acoustically Enhanced Video Feedback

Nearly a quarter of a million images have been collected while testing Melodicon, and of those, about 1500 have been selected for display.  And we've only started to explore...

Visual Music

Being able to see a performance while it occurs can be immensely beneficial to musical students and researchers, and precise tracking of musical tones makes this possible.

Call to Participation

This project is privately funded and depends on the support and feedback of individuals from a wide variety of disciplines, including art, music, dance, engineering, and education.  We are seeking the involvement of anyone who is interested in this work for the purposes of ongoing research and development, as well as participation in performances that demonstrate the unique capabilities of Melodicon as an improvisational tool.  For more information, please contact Michael Hall.
